Te Ao Maori

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere.
Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōna te ao.
The one who partakes of the flora and fauna, that will be their domain.
The one who engages in education, opportunities are boundless.

This year Whaea Toni will be releasing each classroom teacher for 2 days every term.  The focus of her teaching as she works in each classroom will be ‘Te Ao Māori’.

Te Ao Māori literally means ‘the Māori world view’.  This includes Te Reo (the language and dialects), Tikanga (the processes and practices), Marae (the community focal point).
This will be taught mostly through ‘The Arts’ Curriculum, in particular ‘Visual Arts’ but also incorporating ‘Music, Dance and Drama’.

The focus of Term One is Whanaungatanga and Manaakitanga.
Manaakitanga - hospitality, kindness, generosity, support - the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others.
Whanaungatanga - a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging.
Whanaungatanga is the relationship that develops as a result of manaakitanga.  Through caring for others we will gain a sense of belonging.

We used blended pastels to colour in koru which represent ourselves
and our whanau members.

Identity is ‘who you are’ and ‘what makes you special and unique'

We created a visual display that shows aspects of our identity.

Here is a link to Room 2's blog which shows some of their 'Identity' artwork  - http://rangikura-cb-room2.blogspot.co.nz/2016/04/our-identity.html

The focus of Term Two is Matariki.
